SANCTUARY OF MADONNA DEL POPOLO

The church, designed by Sebastiano Taricco in collaboration with architects Rocca and Crappa, was built between 1693 and 1702 on the hill of Cherasco. The church that stood in its place dates back to the 13th century and was already dedicated to the Madonna del Popolo.

The sanctuary has an imposing Baroque façade with exposed bricks adorned with two orders of columns and is characterised by its peculiar polygonal plan in which the presbytery, the choir and the large dome are located. Its interior is characterised by designs by Taricco, stucco work by Beltramelli and 18th-century frescoes by G. Aliberti, but no less important are the interventions by Pietro Metey and P.P.Operti.

The church is now part of the Diocesan Sanctuaries and has recently undergone extensive restoration.
