MUSEO GIARDINO DELLA CIVILTA' DELLA SETA

The Garden Museum of the Silk Civilisation, strongly desired and conceived by historian Mario Monasterolo, aims to raise awareness of the silk-making traditions that have made the town of Racconigi famous since ancient times.

The origins of the art of silk-making date back to the Middle Ages, when many local families dedicated themselves to silkworm breeding to compensate for the widespread poverty. Thanks also to the intervention of the Savoy family, this art grew more and more until it reached its peak in 1700 when in the city there were 33 silk factories with over 4000 employees.

The Museum was inaugurated in 2012 by the association "Sul filo della Seta", which had already dedicated itself to the creation of silkworm farms and the planting of mulberry trees in 2004 to evoke a centuries-old tradition.

The Museum is characterised as a multidisciplinary narrative space through didactic panels, scenographic settings, models and the reproduction of ancient, very evocative documents. It is also possible to see many tools for silkworm breeding and ancient tools for silk spinning.
