PALAZZO SACCO

A 17th-century building and the birthplace of the geologist, palaeontologist and micrologist Federico Sacco, who was born in this building in Fossano on 5 February 1864 in Via Cavour 35 and died in Turin in 1948.

An illustrious figure from Fossano, he held the chair of Geology at the Polytechnic of Turin together with that of Palaeontology. He was a keen mountaineer and speleologist and president of the Italian Alpine Club. He has also written six hundred printed contributions, including books, memoirs of a geomorphological and stratigraphic nature, studying and compiling, among others, the geological sheets of the Tertiary Basin of Piedmont, Abruzzo, Cuneo, Ceva, Genoa and Bologna. He has carried out glacial studies on Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and Monviso, also dealing with

Thanks to the foundation dedicated to him, activities continue in his memory, including the transformation of his birthplace into a historic home and youth hostel.
