CATTEDRALE DI SAN DONATO

The present church, now the seat of the Mondovì diocese, was built between 1743 and 1753 to a design by Francesco Gallo, whose last work it represents, and enlarged ten years later with the large Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament under which the crypt for the bishops' burial was built.

The monumental sandstone doorway, with its richly decorated statuary, leads the visitor to discover the equally rich artistic heritage housed inside the Cathedral.

Many of the works date back to earlier periods, but the greatest number of frescoes, paintings and sculptures are true gems of Piedmontese Rococo Baroque, especially the extensive use of precious polychrome marble that characterised the late 17th-century style.
