ANCIENT ART MUSEUM

The Ancient Art Museum (Official name: Museo Civico d'Arte Antica) in Palazzo Madama, also the seat of the first Senate of the Kingdom of Italy, is also part of the Fondazione Torino Musei and sums up the entire history of the city. The itineraries cover four floors, but this building is a museum not only because of the works it contains, but also because of the rooms in the palace itself. It houses important collections from the Middle Ages, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque arts in the splendid rooms inhabited by the Royal Madames. It is named after the two Madame Royals who lived there: Madame Christine of Bourbon of France, also known as the 'first Royal Madame', who lived there between 1620 and 1663, and Marie Jeanne Baptiste of Savoia Nemours. The museum was established in 1934 and today houses over 70,000 works including the famous Ritratto d'Uomo (Portrait of a Man) by Antonello da Messina and the illuminated Book of Hours Trèsbellesheures de Notre-Dame by Jean de Berry, the only manuscript in the world with miniatures by Jan Van Eyck.
